Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 3

Dick Tracy was sleeping in bed beside his wife, Tess Trueheart-Tracy. He was awaked by a voice which seemed to come from the dresser next to his bed. "Tracy, come in. Tracy its Sam!" Tracy sat up in surprise. "Sam what the hell are you doing in my bedroom?" The only response from the darkness was "Tracy, come in Tracy." The noise woke Tess and she reached over and turned on the light next to the bed. As the light came on, Tracy looked over his bed at the source of the voice. "Damn new wrist radios," he grumbled. Picking it up, he pushed down on a button and spoke into it. "Tracy here. This better be good to wake me up so damn early." Sam Catchem replied, "It is, Tracy. Someone blew up the tracks the 1:00 am train was headed in on. We also have reports of shootout on top of the train." Jumping out of bed and getting dressed, Tracy replied, "I'll be ready in five minutes. Come get me in a squad car." As Tracy rushed to get ready, he reached for his coat and hat and realized they weren't in his closet. "Forgot my coat burned up last week in that fire," he said under his breath. "I'll have to take that blasted yellow set Tess bought for me." Tracy threw on the banana-colored outfit and ran outside to meet Sam as he pulled up.

On the train The Shadow brought the butt his pistol crashing into the jaw of one of the hijackers. The Shadow continued to hide himself from the sight of marauders to instill confusion in them as to what was happening. To the other men, it looked as if their comrade was being attacked by a ghost. It gave The Shadow a psychological edge over his enemies. The Shadow delivered a snap kick to the Nazi's mid section, doubling him over. As the man was bent over, The Shadow smashed the butt of his gun into the back of the man's head forcing him onto his hand's and knees. The Shadow then kicked the Nazi in the ribs, sending him tumbling off the train. The rest of the Nazi's were frozen in fear as they watched what seemed to be phantom assault their comrade. The Shadow moved towards the next Nazi when gun shots rang out from behind him.

Instinctively, The Shadow jumped down in between two of the train cars for cover. Two of the Nazi's fell dead, as the rest returned fire at their attackers. Flattop yelled, "Kill em' all and get the coffin! It's in one of these cars." With attacks coming on all sides, The Shadow was unable to hold his concentration on concealing himself, he was now visible to everyone. He didn't know who this new group was but from what they said they were also after the coffin. On the train cars above, Flattop and his men were exchanging bullets with The Brow and his Nazi's. With no cover for either group it was a Mexican standoff ? two sides shooting at each in the open with no cover ? and The Shadow was caught in the middle. The next car over from him was the sarcophagus. The Shadow could feel its mystical energy but with both sides shooting on top of the train and all outside doors locked by train personnel, the only way to get to the coffin was by going through the shootout on top of the train.

Climbing up onto the ladder to the roof of the train The Shadow positioned himself so that only his arms, shoulders and head were above the roof of the train while the rest of his body remained lower down on the ladder and protected. He watched as Gruesome was hit by three bullets in the chest and fell down dead. Itchy blew the head off a Nazi as the bullets continued to fly. From his spot in between the cars The Shadow fired first on the Nazi's hitting one them in the shins causing him to fall to the ground. As he lay there the Shadow put a bullet in his heart to finish him. Now seeing The Shadow the Nazi's began to fire on him as well as Flattop's gang. As bullets bounced off the roof of the train around him, The Shadow ducked his head down lower than the train roof for protection. After a few seconds, he sprang his head and arms back up now firing at Flattops group, bullets from both The Shadow's gun and the Nazi's turned Mumbles into a pulpy mess of blood. Twisting around, The Shadow fired on the Nazi's putting a bullet through the eye of one of them. As the corpse fell limp on the roof of the train, police sirens could be heard in the distance.

Dick Tracy was in the lead with Sam Catchem, followed by nine other squad cars with lights flashing and sirens blaring. Ahead of him, Tracy could see the outline of the train with bright orange flashes appearing all over the top of it. Tracy turned to Sam, "They're still shooting it out on top of the train. Move it Sam before innocent people on the train get hurt!" Sam pressed the pedal to the floor and buildings on the street became a blur as the squad cars sped towards the bloodbath ahead.

Seeing the squad cars coming, Flattop decided to cut his loses and leave. He yelled to Itchy, "The cops is comin', lets get outta here. We can make a run at the coffin lata." Flattop and Itchy jumped off the train and into their car. As they drove away, Itchy turned to Flattop, "What the hell happened back there? Did you see those guys? They was Nazis! And who the hell was the guy wit the black threads on shootin' at everyone?" Flattop sighed as he replied "I don't now what happened but I know Big Boy ain't gonna like to hear about it."

As Flattop jumped off the train The Brow signaled his men to depart. They had already taken heavy loses and a fight with the Chicago PD would not help matters. The Brow knew where the coffin was headed anyway.

The Shadow was frustrated. He had been so close to retrieving the coffin and coming one step closer to his redemption then all hell broke loose. With the police on the way, he would not have time to perform the incantation and send the coffin back to Shambala. Now he would have to get the coffin from the museum. Moreover, there were two opposing factions after the coffin as well. This would not be the simple mission he thought it would because the police would also now be involved. The Shadow realized that he needed more information on what exactly was going on with these two groups and to get that information he would need agents. The Shadow leapt from the train and blended into the night, leaving the coffin for now but vowing to accomplish his task.

Tracy pulled up and saw bodies all over the place. He immediately recognized the bodies of Mumbles and Gruesome. Looking around he saw the bodies of men with swastikas on their arms. He looked at Sam, "What the hell are Big Boy's men doing shooting it out with a bunch of Germans? We needed to find a survivor to give us some answers. As the police searched the area they found a Nazi beaten and bruised but alive. He kept repeating something in German about a ghost. They also found the unconscious body of Scorpio. Tracy looked at Sam, "Take Scorpio and the Kraut downtown for questioning we got mobsters, Nazi's and some kinda ghost I want answers." The police loaded the survivors into squad cars as the meat wagon pulled up for the corpses.
