Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 2

After arriving to Earth through a portal in South America, The Shadow made his way to Chicago. He used the alias Kent Allard when traveling to avoid getting noticed. He thought that if used the name of the long missing Lamont Cranston it would draw a lot of unneeded attention. The Shadow made it to Chicago on the day the train was to come into town. He knew the time the train would arrive and where it was headed from the information his mentor had placed in his mind. He hoped this would be an easy mission that he could simply climb aboard the train, find the sarcophagus, recite the incantation he was given and teleport the coffin to Shambala. While this should have been an easy mission, his training with Dr. Fate and his life as Ying Ko had taught him to always be prepared for the worst and the worst usually meant violence. The Shadow came to the conclusion that he needed to arm himself.

Under the guise of Kent Allard The Shadow walked in one of Chicago's gun stores and began to look at the various weapons on display. He looked at rifles, knives, and guns, but it was the twin colt .45's behind the counter that caught his eye. Allard approached the clerk and looked him in eye. The clerk's body went stiff as his mind slipped under the control of The Shadow. The Shadow spoke, "You're going to give me those colt .45's behind the counter." The clerk echoed what he heard in a hollow voice, "I'm going to give those colt .45's behind the counter." Bending down, the clerk picked up the guns and handed them to The Shadow. Taking them, The Shadow commanded, "You are also going to give me 300 rounds of ammunition for these weapons." Again the clerk repeated what he was told as he handed The Shadow the bullets for the guns. Putting the guns and bullets into his pocket, The Shadow gave the clerk one last command, "You are going to remain under my power until I leave the store, then you will go about your business with no recollection of this encounter taking place." The clerk repeated the command. As Kent Allard left the store the clerk went about his usual business. Several hours later he was trying to figure what happened to a pair of twin Colt's and a substantial amount of ammunition.

  1: 00 am

It was mid-September in Chicago; in most parts of the country it was changing from summer to fall, but in Chicago, fall was already in full swing. There was a chill in the air as the wind ripped through the city. The lamps around the tracks illuminated them in a soft glow. All of the warehouses and stores built along the tracks were empty and dark. The Shadow blended in with dark terrain as he crouched down on the ledge of a water tower over looking the train tracks. His cloak and scarf whipped in the wind behind him as his breath froze in the air in front of his face. He was waiting patiently for the train to roll beneath him so he could jump aboard and send the sarcophagus of Gilgamesh back to its rightful home. In the distance, he could hear the whistle of the train as it approached. The Shadow braced his body and leapt onto the train as it drove past the water tower, landing on the first car of the train. Knowing that the coffin was located in the middle of the train, The Shadow began to walk across the top of the train towards his destination.

Several blocks ahead of the train Flattop sat in car with a three other men. The gangster in the front seat next to Flattop was known as Itchy. He was given this name as a result of his propensity to be constantly scratching himself. Behind them sat Mumbles, given his name for a stutter that was so bad, his speech was nearly incomprehensible. Beside him sat Gruesome, a brute of man. They were parked under an overpass the train would have to go through in order to reach the museum. Flattop radioed the second team of men with them, "Hey Scorpio, Sleet. Let's run over the plan one more time. When you see the train, pull the lever to switch the tracks and send the train headin' downtown. When the conductor sees the train headin' the wrong way he'll stop the train. When it stops, the four of us will jump on and force the train downtown to where we got the truck ready and then we will switch the coffin. If everything goes right we should get this done before anyone notices the train is late." Sleet radioed back, "No problem Flattop I'm waitin' by the lever and Scorpio is up ahead looking out for the train." Scorpio looked down the tracks and saw the train coming. As he turned to signal Sleet, he saw him, several buildings around the tracks, and the bridge go up in a towering inferno as the bridge exploded.

The force of the explosion knocked Scorpio unconscious and threw him to the ground. The conductor saw the exploding bridge and pulled on the emergency brake. On top of the train, The Shadow lost his footing as the train slammed to a stop. He went sliding off the top of the car he was standing on. Reaching out, he grabbed the edge of the car's roof and hung off the side of the train. As he pulled himself back onto the roof of the train car, he grabbed the holstered .45's at his sides thinking to himself, Prepare for the worst and the worst usually means violence.

From one of the warehouses along side the tracks, The Brow sent out the order to his Nazi troops to storm the train. He then lead the charge as a dozen Nazis swarmed on the train like ants on a discarded piece of candy. They scaled the sides the train, climbing on top of it. The Brow was the first one to climb on the roof of the train. When he got to the top he thought he saw something standing a few cars ahead of him, looking at him like a ghost or a spirit. Readjusting his eyes, he looked again and saw nothing. Thinking nothing of the situation, he continued to walk across the car tops.

The Shadow used his power to shroud himself from the view of the marauders. With the dim light his body did not project much of a silhouette. Even if these people were looking for him they would have a difficult time locating him. He did not need their attention. He kept his guns at his side in case if he needed them, but right now these marauders were not his concern. He thought to himself, I'm only here for the sarcophagus as long as these people are after something else on the train then I can wait until they conclude their operation and continue with my own. The Shadow studied the hijackers; they wore military style clothes, had military weapons, and spoke in German. He also noticed that each one of them wore an emblem on their arm of a bent cross. It was a mystical symbol that he had seen during his years of training. The Shadow thought to himself, If they wear mystical symbols they may well be after the coffin. The Shadow's suspicions were confirmed as their leader, the man with the strangely deformed brow, said in German, "Check all of the cars and find the sarcophagus!"

  The Shadow sprang into action.

As Flattop saw the explosion he shouted, "Someone else is hittin' the train. Let's go." Flattop sped his car down the street towards the train. As he pulled the car to a stop he saw a group of men on top of the train armed with guns. One of them seemed to be getting assaulted by thin air. Grabbing his Tommy Gun, he shouted to the men in the car, "Let's move." Flattop and his crew climbed to the top of the train and began shooting."
