Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 4

Tracy walked down the brightly lit hallway of police headquarters with a fresh cup of scalding hot coffee in his hand. He had a grim look of determination on his face as he kicked in the door of the first interrogation room. The room was gray on all sides with no windows and a single light in the ceiling. There was a white table in the room with men on both sides of it. The Nazi solider sat stiff and straight in his chair, despite the false bravado he was trying to portray, his skin was pale white and his body was shaking. Sam was already in the room, he sat across the table from the Nazi and continued to question him "Just what are you doing in this country trying to rob a train?" The Nazi stared at the wall and did not open his mouth. Sam's voice rose, "Look buddy, you better start answering some questions or I'm gonna have to get rough." Tracy walked past the Nazi and sat down next to Sam. Tracy looked over at the Nazi and said "Sam you're going about this all wrong. You have to show this guy some good old American hospitality. Coffee?" Tracy reached across the table as if he was going to hand the soldier the coffee, when suddenly he dropped the boiling hot coffee and let it spill into the German's lap. As the Nazi screamed in pain and jumped out of his chair, Tracy sprang from his chair grabbed the Nazi by his collar and slammed him into the wall. In a threatening tone of voice, Tracy said, "Sorry about the accident, spilling that hot coffee into your lap and all, and then when you jumped up I tried to help but tripped, luckily you were able to catch me before I fell. You see, when people don't give me the answers I need, I tend to get a little clumsy and when I get clumsy accidents happen. Now if you don't want anymore accidents to happen, maybe you can calm my nerves by answering some questions. What were you doing trying to rob that train?!"

The Nazi began to cry in fear as he said "V-ver trying to get the coffin that is on its vay to the museum." Tracy slammed him against the wall again. "A coffin?! You expect me to believe that you travel half way across the world, enter a foreign country and blow up a piece of my city for a coffin? Why?!" The Nazi cried, "I don't know I just vollow orders, ya." Tracy continued his questioning, "Whose orders?! Who is here in Chicago giving you orders and how many of you are there?" The Nazi replied with tears in his eyes, "I von't tell. I vill not betray my Fatherland. Heil Germany! Heil Hitler!" Tracy frowned, "You're making nervous again and you know what happens when I get nervous." Tracy tightened his grip on the Nazi causing the solider to cry out. "Pruneface! Pruneface and The Brow give us our orders there vere twenty of us but I don't know how many ve lost on the train."

"That's more like it," Tracy said, "I feel like I'm calming down a little. Now what went wrong? Why were you shooting it out with those other men?" The Nazi began to slump down and whimper. Tracy said, "I'm not going to ask again what went wrong. Why were you shooting on top of the train?" The Nazi screamed, "I don't know about a shootout. I vas attacked by a ghost. I vas beaten to the ground and thrown off the train, but as I vas being struck, I looked around and saw nothing. A spirit attacked me. The Fuhrer's desire for mystical objects has brought some demon down upon us." The Nazi began to cry hysterically. Tracy let him go as the Nazi sank to the floor and curled up in a ball.

Tracy and Sam left the room. As they were walking down the hall, Sam said, "Ya gotta watch how you handle these suspects Tracy, the D.A. ain't gonna like this." Tracy replied with a snarl, "Prosecuting is the D.A.'s problem, mine is putting a stop to this thing before the War in Europe ends up in our laps and on the streets of Chicago. Now look, I'm going talk to Scorpio. I need you to find out everything you can about These Pruneface and Brow guys. Check the federal files if you have to, get Pat to find out all he can about who we can talk to at the museum about this coffin, and get me the forensics report on this shootout ASAP."

Tracy stopped in front of the door the second interrogation room. He grabbed the handle and opened the door. This room looked just like the first one except there was only one man calmly seated in this room. Scorpio was seated in his chair, balancing it on its back two legs. He looked over a Tracy with a smirk and said, "You got nothin' on me coppa. I was out for a late walk when all the sudden the bridge blew up in my face. I don't even need my lawyer." Tracy walked up to Scorpio's chair and kicked out the back to legs. Scorpio's skull smashed into the floor as the chair fell out from under him. Standing over him and looking down with a smile on his face, Tracy said, "Now that I've got your attention maybe we can get down to business. What did Big Boy send you low-lifes after on that train?" Pulling his chair into an upright position and rubbing the back of his head Scorpio replied, "I don't know what you're talking about I was out for a night time walk when all of the sudden the bridge blew up and knocked me out. It ain't no crime to be an accident victim." Standing over Scorpio, Tracy asked, "Out for a night time walk? All by yourself or did you have any friends with you?" Scorpio said, "Sleet was with me but he was burned in the fire from what I saw." Tracy rubbed his hand over his chin and continued his questioning "Really? Just Sleet? That's strange because your pal Gruesome is just a corpse now and there isn't even enough of Mumbles to be called a corpse and I'm betting some of your other buddies were there too." Scorpio kept his cool. "Look coppa, like I said ya got nothin' on me. I don't even need a lawyer to help me I was at the scene of an accident and that's all that happened. So let me go before I sue ya for keepin' me against my will."

Tracy continued to smile as he sat down on the table and looked at Scorpio "You're right Scorpio. I got nothing I can use to put you in the slammer with, but let me tell what I do have. I have three of your friends dead and a group of Nazis. I've got one of those Nazis to spill his guts and tell me about some coffin, a ghost, and your boys. I know exactly what happened on top of that train." Scorpio broke out in laughter, "Even if you do have that, I was knocked out the entire time! Not only was I not in any shootout, I was out cold, I didn't even see nothin'!" Tracy kept his composure and continued, "By the way, how does your head feel?" Scorpio replied, "Not that ya really care but it hurts a little" Tracy asked, "No feeling of permanent damage? You figure you will be alright in a day or two." Scorpio smirked, "A tough guy like me will go home sleep this off and be fine in the morning." Tracy looked him in the eye, "No trip to the hospital or anything?" Scorpio replied, "Hospitals is fer wimps." Tracy leaned in towards Scorpio. "You know, the rest of your pals don't know what happened to you. They didn't see you in the fire fight and there's no record of you ever going to the hospital." Scorpio looked at Tracy with a puzzled expression on his face. "So what? Even if my friends was there they'd know I was OK next time they saw me." Tracy grinned, "Let's say they do see you are you just going tell them that you were knocked out during the fight? They'll never believe it. You're a dead man Scorpio." Scorpio, more confused then ever, asked, "Why ain't they gonna believe me. It's the truth of what happened, they got no reason not to believe me. Your losin' it coppa."

Tracy's face suddenly became a frozen expression of ruthlessness. "Because Scorpio, I didn't finish telling you what else I got. The store you were standing next to blew up also and now two grand in cash is missing, it probably burned up in the fire but we don't know for sure, so in the papers tomorrow it will just read as two grand missing. We have your friends in a fire fight with you supposedly unconscious and unable to help. Now keep in mind the fact that you were knocked out will be unreported because I brought you here before taking you to the hospital and you denied any medical help saying you would be OK. Come to think of it since I got nothing on you, you also said you don't need a lawyer. In fact that means there's no record of you ever being here tonight either."

Scorpio smiled, "So you're telling me all that ya can prove is that I wasn't anywhere tonight. That will hold up in district court real well." Tracy replied in a cold voice, "You're forgetting the missing two grand, and it's not district court you should be concerned about it's the court of opinion from Big Boy and your pals. Big Boy's going to hear about the shootout from your pals and they aren't going to know where you were. He is also going to read about the missing two grand. You know I just happen to have an extra two grand of my own I've been looking to invest. What if I invest it in you? I have your bank account number I could deposit it right into your bank account. The bank needs ID for a withdraw, but anyone could just put money into an account. What if first thing tomorrow morning I put my two grand in your account? That would be great! Only thing is I know Big Boy watches your accounts. What conclusion do you think he's going to come to when he sees two grand missing from the store you were supposedly knocked out next to, two grand in your account the next day, and no record of you being taken either to the hospital or here because you denied any medical help and your lawyer. Do you think he's going to believe that you were knocked out, brought here, and even though you wouldn't talk, I put two grand in your account, or that you were fine after the explosion, saw two grand lying on the floor of the store, pocketed it and left your friends to die in a shootout without even getting the coffin he was after. With your scum bag reputation I think I know what conclusion Big Boy will come to, and when he thinks that you took some easy cash and not only left the job he sent you on unfinished but also left some of his boys to die what do you think he is going to do to you?"

Scorpio whispered in disbelief, "Two grand of your own money. No way you would do it. No way." Tracy laughed, "You've got not next of kin or living will. I've done my homework your account will be seized by the state. You don't think I have a friend at the state who will reimburse me my money then? I'll just be loaning the 2 grand for a couple months to have you bumped off Scorpio. That seems like a pretty good investment to me. Like I said, unless you tell me everything you know about Big Boy and this attempted heist you're a dead man." Scorpio put his hands over his face and sighed. "Look, I'll tell ya what I know but, no way will I testify. That's another death sentence for me." With that, Scorpio gave Tracy all of the information he had.
