Book 1 - Chapter 4 (cont'd)

Ra's attacked swinging his blade with both powerful arms. Zorro used both hands to again block and counter with Ra's counting his steps as he did so, finally he jumped backwards as Ra's pulled back and swung with all the force he could muster. Landing in a crouching position on the plateau Zorro quickly thrust his blade forward only to have it whiz through empty air. Ra's brought the butt of his sword crashing into Zorro's jaw from below him, shattering it. Ra's had feinted his death blow figuring on Zorro's ploy. Zorro was knocked flat on his back he looked up to see Ra's climbing onto the plateau. Zorro rolled backwards to gain space. Anticipating the roll Ra's jumped and spun in mid air as Zorro finished his roll and began to spring to his feet Ra's body completed its spin his sword came from over his shoulder and slashed through Zorro's quadriceps tearing chunks of bone and muscle as it came through his leg.

Zorro fell to his knees, looking up his face in anguish he saw Ra's raising his sword over his right shoulder. Zorro saw his last chance He thrust his sword at Ra's heart. Ra's twisting his torso pulling his right shoulder back and shifting his left one forward. Zorro's long thin blade slid into Ra's left shoulder and poked out of the back of his shoulder blade. Ra's grimaced in pain as he was impaled on the blade he then brought his sword down at Zorro's arm cutting it off at the elbow. Zorro screamed in pain as Ra's grabbed the bloody forearm; hand still attached to the sword which protruded from his back. He pulled the arm and the sword slowly retraced its path back through Ra's body until it was free. Looking down at the crippled Zorro he put his hand on Zorro's shoulder and spoke, "Go to oblivion knowing you have failed guardian. Not only failed in protecting the talisman but also in upholding the honor of your predecessors. Know from this day on Zorro shall be known as the man who failed to prevent the exterminator of this putrid version of human beings from gaining the means he needed to eradicate them. Die guardian and know you and all those who have born you name have failed!" Ra's then dropped his sword to his hip pulled it back and thrust it through Zorro's chest. Zorro looked up in a moment of agony and then his head fell limp.

Letting go of his shoulder Ra's lifted the talisman from around Zorro's neck and held it in front of him. For a moment he stated at it covered in blood both his and Zorro's. Ra's put the talisman around his own neck and then pulled his sword from Zorro's limp body. Ra's then turned to the dark corner of the web maze and stared for a minute. Finally he spoke, "Come out and look boy! Look at your mentor who dared to defy me! See how all those who oppose me die! You have a choice to make boy! You can continue to carry on the failed legacy of Zorro, and try to oppose me! Know that if you choose this path you shall end up as your mentor did, dead at my feet! Your other choice is to go a live a normal life, you may even be lucky enough to live out your life span before I destroy all who live! Whatever you do remember this day remember my victory, remember that Ra's al Ghul ended the legend of Zorro!" Then he climbed down off the plateau and exited the cave.

When he got outside he nearly collapsed as Ubu approached him and put his arm under him helping him to his carriage. "Take me to the nearest Lazarus pit. This fight took much from me. However it was successful! The ultimate prize is now in my grasp!"

Back in the cave a small boy walked out of the dark corner of the rope maze. He walked to the center of the cave and climbed onto the plateau. He stood over the body of Zorro. He looked down at his mentor's body. The boy looked down and not a single tear escaped his eyes. He looked down with a hardened face of anger and hatred.

  Five years ago...

Bruce again committed what he had read to his memory. He placed the books back on the shelf. He then slipped out of the Master's room and into the main hallway. He was standing behind the two guards. This time he did take the guards out. Never pass on a chance to test your skills, he thought. He followed the hallway to the main entrance of the cave that was the home of the army of the shadow. Then he made his way into the desert.

The next morning Ra's al Ghul returned to his home. As he entered his personal library to record the events of the past few days he paused and looked around. Turning to Ubu he said, "It appears as if we have a detective in our midst's."
