Book 1 - Chapter 4 (cont'd)

Zorro sprinted at Ra's swinging his blade at Ra's neck. Ra's lifted his arms bringing his blade up to block the blow, however in mid swing Zorro twisted his wrist and changed the direction of his swing from a downward slope to a horizontal slash. The slash cut Ra's across his forearms drawing even more blood. Ra's turned his body with the slash and stepped forward when his shoulders were parallel to Zorro's body he brought his right elbow smashing into the back of Zorro's head. The blow sent Zorro's upper body leaning forward. As he was off balance, Ra's landed a sidekick to Zorro's chest that sent him falling to the floor. Zorro rolled backwards into the fall and sprang to his feet.

Ra's charged still holding his sword with both hands swung at Zorro. Zorro lifted his sword to block the blow but the force of it collapsed his wrist so the blade kept coming. Zorro had to spin to the side to avoid it but this allowed Ra's to move in closer. Ra's left hand released from his sword and he swung it in a back hand motion that stuck Zorro in the face sending him stumbling backwards. Ra's lifted his arms above his head and swung at Zorro. Zorro again lifted his arm to block the blow but as before his wrist collapsed beneath the power of Ra's chiseled arms, forcing Zorro to pitch off balance, in order to avoid the blade. Ra's was now only inches from Zorro and he struck him with an uppercut to the jaw. Zorro's head snapped back and Ra's swung his sword in an attempt to behead him. Zorro ducked under the sword and rolled backwards several times to put some space between him and the man who sought his medallion.

Zorro looked at Ra's in awe, the man stood drenched in blood and was still as strong as he was when the battle begun. Zorro thought to himself, He has realized my avenue of attack. He knew that by using both arms to wield his weapon he would be able to break my one armed defense and use his arms and legs to strike me. If I do not switch to attacking and defending with both arms he will either strike me hard enough to stun me and deliver a fatal blow with his sword, or simply beat me to death if his body holds up long enough! I can't believe he has not fallen yet! He also knows by forcing me to fight with both arms he will take away my ability to switch direction in mid swing and slash him! Truly this man is a skilled fighter the likes of which I have yet to face. For the first time in any battle he had been in Zorro began to fear his opponent.

Sensing he had the advantage Ra's charged. Zorro quickly placed his other hand on his sword and the two began to exchange thrusts and blocks back and forth. With each blow the superior strength of Ra's forced Zorro to back up. Zorro continued to give ground until he reached the series of roped which extended from ceiling to floor and were anchored at both ends. These ropes were at varying angles and heights Zorro would practice swinging on them and jumping through them to improve his agility and balance, they created a dense maze of taught lines that Zorro could use to his advantage. Zorro ducked under the first rope as Ra's brought his sword slicing through it. Zorro continued to back up as he jumped bringing his legs over a rope which ran below him. Zorro landed and quickly looked in the far back of the rope maze peering into the darkness which shrouded that side of the cave. Zorro cursed under his breath. Ra's swung his blade in a backhand motion at Zorro he dived over it and rolled back into the main area of the cave. Ra's turned knowing why Zorro had abandoned his advantage. Ra's had known what was in the dark corner of the cave from the moment he entered it.

Zorro waited for Ra's, knowing that back in the open he would have to fight with two hands on his sword again. Zorro needed some kind of advantage to fight off of. The plateau was the only thing near him. He thought if he could let Ra's back him up to the plateau Ra's might think he would be forced to stop backing up and then Ra's superior strength would break through his defenses. However, Zorro knew exactly how many steps he was from the plateau even walking backwards and fencing. If he could make it to the plateau he could draw Ra's into attempting to strike a death blow. He could then jump backwards on to the plateau and have a high ground advantage, as Ra's pitched off balance from the death blow attempt Zorro could resume his one hand fighting stance from the high ground and run Ra's through. Zorro had studied Ra's as they fought he knew from his previous attacks that Ra's would go for the death blow at that point.
