Book 4 - Chapter 3 (cont'd)

Batman continued to walk into the jungle in front of him through thick trees he could see the monolithic structure that was the pyramid. Batman stopped, looked around, and said, "Come out." As if walking out of the wind itself, Ra's emerged from the jungle next to him. "Bravo, Detective. Even the most skilled tracker would have had a difficult time locating me and you found me in mere seconds. You always seem to reaffirm yourself as my choice for my daughter's consort." Glaring at Ra's, Batman said, "It's over Ra's. Your sick dream ends here." Without changing his expression Ra's answered, "Now Detective, You must be aware of the village I came across on my way here. If you do not cooperate with me my men will be forced to slay them, and, as we both know, to you even the lives a few savages are to valuable to be cast aside. Why did you think I let you follow me this far. You must have known that I had a part for you play in this grand opera. From the moment you first entered my army I have been training you for this moment. I will admit I had have hoped you and Talia would have sired me and heir by now, but we can't always get what we want. Can we?" Batman stared into Ra's eyes, "What do you want Ra's?" Ra's smiled, "Only for you to let me be your squire." Ra's then turned and headed back for the temple with Batman following him.

Batman and Ra's walked into the entrance of the temple. Upon entering the temple, Batman was amazed at the size of the interior. The exterior of the building did not seem large enough to house what was inside. The interior of the temple was an amphitheater similar to the Roman Coliseum. There were thousands of rows of stone benches that ran around the inside of the amphitheater. The stands were full of warriors that were all shouting and screaming. Batman and Ra's stood on the dirt floor of the arena. To his left Batman could see Ra's men holding the villagers at gunpoint. On the far right side of the arena, Batman saw two guards in front of an opening which lead into a deeper tunnel. The entrance to the portal, Batman thought. Directly in front of Batman was a third tunnel with a huge gate across it. Ra's approached the center of the arena and the crowd quieted. As Ra's spoke, his words echoed throughout the building he said, "Great protectors of Shambala, I present to you my master The Batman. He has asked to invoke the rite of Trial by Combat in order to enter hollowed gates of Shambala." With that, the warriors all began bagging their spears on the ground. Ra's left the center of the area. As he passed Batman he said, "Good bye Detective. You may die knowing that you have served me well. Do not worry about the natives, they already know how to live in harmony with nature, I shall let them live. The rest of the world, however, is a different story."

Once Ra's left the arena the huge gate opposite Batman slid open. Batman threw his arms up in front of him and shifted his legs back in a defensive stance. He peered in the darkness trying to see exactly what his adversary was. A huge warrior emerged from the darkness. He held a gigantic spear in his right hand. His entire body was covered in the hide of a dead alligator, the head of the alligator was set above his brow like a war helmet. It almost looks as if Bane had skinned Croc and was using him as a suit of armor, Batman thought. The lumbering giant stepped towards Batman as the crowd cheered. Batman reached into his utility belt and threw a batarang at the behemoth's chest. The batarang landed with a "Thunk", embedding itself in the alligator armor on the giant's chest. "The alligator hide is to think for any of my weapons to penetrate," Batman said to himself. The goliath let loose a scream as he pulled the batarang from his reptilian garments and charged The Batman. Batman stood still as the warrior came closer and closer to him. Just as Batman was in reach of the man-beast, he stepped aside, throwing his foot in front of the giant's ankle and delivering a chop to the back of his head. The juggernaut fell face forward crashing into the ground, snapping his spear in two as he hit.

Batman resumed his defensive stance. Akido. Use his own strength and momentum against him, but that move seemed to do little more then take him by surprise, he thought. The hulking warrior lifted his face from the dirt with look of pure anger on it and swung his arm at Batman with the force of sledgehammer. Batman dropped down on his hands and knees, then from the ground delivered a thrust kick to the warrior's solar plexus. Between the giant's muscles and the alligator hide Batman felt like he had kicked a slab of granite. The colossus lifted his leg and tried to stomp on Batman, but Batman rolled out the way and onto his feet. The giant threw a punch that Batman ducked under. He then hit the giant with a jab to the chest, an uppercut to the ribs, and a second jab to the face. The giant stood unaffected by the blows; he simply reached out grabbed Batman by the neck, lifting him off the ground. As Batman was being choked, he looked to his left. He saw Ra's and several of his men killing the guards in front of the tunnel which led to the portal. With the rest of the guardians watching the battle none of them saw Ra's make his move.

Batman could feel his windpipe being crushed by the giant's iron grip. Batman swung his leg around hitting the giant in the face with a roundhouse kick. He then immediately brought his foot back across the giants face with a hook kick, but the giant's grip was unrelenting. Reaching into his utility belt, Batman pulled out a tear gas pellet and threw it at the giants face. The exploding pellet caught the warrior by surprise. Breathing in deeply the giant began to choke; he dropped Batman to the ground and put his hands around his neck. Batman landed crouched down and struck the giant in one knee and then the other consecutively. He then sprang up and sent a crushing uppercut in the giant's jaw that sent his head snapping backwards. The giant pulled his head back unfazed by the blow and swatted Batman aside with his massive hand. Batman rolled as he fell to the ground. As Batman sprang to his feet, the giant was on top of him. The massive man wrapped his arms around Batman in a crushing bear hug. Batman threw his head back in pain as he could he feel his spines close to snapping. Batman threw a chop to the giant's forehead causing blood to trickle down into the giant's eyes. Batman then brought both his fists crashing into the giant's ears. Blind and off balance the giant dropped Batman. Batman regained his footing and landed a chop to the giant's throat crushing his trachea. The giant grabbed his neck and began gasping for breath. He stumbled backwards as his eyes rolled into the back of his head. Finally the giant fell backwards unconscious. As the giant hit the ground, Batman rushed over to him and knelt down beside him. He then removed a scalpel and a thin straw from his utility belt. He performed an emergency tracheotomy on the giant. No life is unimportant, he thought.

Batman stood up. He was surrounded by the hundreds of the warriors in the crowd.
