Book 4 - Chapter 3

The thick mist caused from the clouds began to dissipate in front of him. Looking down from his plane, The Batman could see the dense green jungle sprawled out before him. The beauty of the jungle was enough to cause even The Dark Knight to take a second and appreciate its beauty. Looking at this place, I can see why Ra's so fervently believes in helping preserve the tranquility of nature, Batman thought to himself. However, there are other ways to preserve this place without initiating world wide genocide. I will have make a note to have Bruce Wayne send another sizable donation to the Save The Rainforest fund. The small airport came into Batman's view. As he flew over, Batman could see the dead bodies strewn across the landing strip. Batman landed, then made a quick check of the area for survivors. Having found none, he then climbed back into the Batplane and flew deeper over the jungle.

Using infrared scanners he could see a group of people making their way through the jungle. They're headed directly for the coordinates of the portal, Batman thought, that must be Ra's and his men. Batman decided it would be better to lower himself into the jungle a mile or two behind them. Even if Ra's knows I'm coming, he doesn't know when I'm coming. That is a small element of surprise I can use to my advantage. The plane dived down low so that it hovered over the treetops. The exhaust from the jets caused the tops of the trees to sway, but not a single sound could be heard from the plane. The corridor underneath the pilot seat slid open, and a thick cord dropped down between the trees onto the jungle floor. Batman slid down the rope and landed in the jungle. He took a small remote control out of his utility belt. Using the remote he instructed the computer on the Batplane to fly back to over 40,000 feet, convert back into the Wayne Aviation SlipStream, and land itself on the runway of the deserted airport. If anyone came to check on the airport, nobody would question the jet being there. Bruce Wayne had a scheduled arrival time listed with the tower.

Once the Batplane was out of view, Batman began his trek into the jungle. Ra's path was easy to follow. There was a direct line of foliage cut down and trampled over. This is too sloppy for Ra's, Batman thought, he wants to make sure that I'm able to follow him. Batman continued to follow the path Ra's had left for him. Even in the jungle, Batman was aware of everything around him. Above him were several howler monkeys eating in the trees. To his left there was an aardvark raiding an anthill. To his right, 50 meters out, lurking in the bushes a jaguar was watching his every move. I'm large then the jaguar and its broad day light it probably won't attack, Batman thought. Batman shifted a batarang from his utility belt into his hand. Just in case. Entering a clearing in the woods, he found the remains of a small village consisting of grass huts used by the humble people who lived in the jungle. The village seemed totally deserted. As Batman walked through the village, he noticed bullet holes in the outer walls of the huts. He searched the village but he could not find any natives dead or alive. There are no blood stains any where in the village, Batman thought to himself, Ra's didn't kill these people; he captured them. Preparing himself for a hostage situation, Batman began his trek deeper into the jungle.

A mile a head of Batman, Ra's lead a small group of his men through the jungle. Ra's was sweating, his heart was beating rapidly, but a smile almost found a way to creep onto his face. Ra's al Ghul was a man who throughout his life had tried to keep his emotions in check, but now he could barley contain himself. He was no less then mile from his goal, his plan had nearly worked to perfection. By now the Detective should be only a few miles behind us and Ubu should have finished of Zorro, Ra's thought to himself. All Ra's could see in front of him was the dense green plant life of the jungle. Working his way through the topical paradise only strengthened Ra's resolve to carry out his quest. If the life giving forest around me is not worth fighting for, Ra's thought, what is? Once the second age of man dawns I will be remembered as a visionary and a hero. My name shall be held in the highest reverence. Ra's reached up and moved another mass of tree branches from his way. "This is where the coordinates in Crane's book said the portal would be. Where is it!?" Ra's screamed. The sunlight glistened off the talisman around Ra's neck. Suddenly, a beam of light shot forward from it. The very air began to shift and blur as if it were a watercolor painting. Suddenly Ra's stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes opened wide and his mouth hung open like that of thirsty dog. Ra's could hardly take in the grandeur of what he was seeing. Before him stood a stone construct unmatched by any other on Earth, made of a bright golden rocky substance that Ra's couldn't identify. It appeared similar to the Aztec temples in Mexico. There were five rectangular sections built on top of one another with a set of stairs running up the center of it. However, there was something odd about the angles of the pyramid. Looking at it actually caused a feeling of nausea in Ra's and his men that he could not account for. As Ra's calmed himself and his body he thought, it is almost as if the pyramid is constructed in more then three dimensions. Our minds simply cannot fully comprehend what we are looking at.

Suddenly a large cavern formed at the base of the pyramid. From the opening Ra's and his men watched as a group of men dressed like Aztec warriors emerged from the cave. They wore garments made of animal skins and carried spears and shields. The leader of the group approached Ra's. He stopped a few feet in front of Ra's and spoke. The mystic aura around the temple allowed all to hear others speaking in their native tongue. "You have come to the sacred gates of Shambala. Though you wear the key, none may enter its halls without first engaging in Trial by Combat." Ra's answered the warrior, "I am aware of the sacred rite of trial by combat. While I wear the talisman I am not he who seeks entrance to Shambala, I am but a squire of my master. It is he who shall partake in the trial." The warrior took Ra's word. His clan lived by a code of honor — there was not even a word for "lying" in their vocabulary. After conversing with the warrior, Ra's walked back into the jungle, hid among the foliage, and waited.
