Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 12

Gilgamesh turned his head towards Flattop and his men. Terrified, JoJo screamed, "What the hell is that?!" Flattop's only response was to start shooting at the juggernaut. The bullets dug into the massive corpse but had no effect. The bullets did not even cause the monster to pause. Gilgamesh lifted his axe vertically across his shoulder and swung it down slicing JoJo Nidle in half at the waist. Flattop and Steve emptied their Tommy Guns at the warrior god as they ran along the wall toward the police. The monster slowly turned its head towards The Shadow and began to stride towards him. The Shadow pointed both of his pistols at Gilgamesh and began to fire as he slowly stepped back along the wall inching towards the Nazis behind him. Gilgamesh continued towards The Shadow, stepping on the head of Faceless Redrum and crushing it under his massive heel. No one had ever seen Faceless Redrum's real face and now no one ever would. The Shadow continued to fire in vain as he backed into the group of Nazi's still staring in awe at the abomination. The monster's hollow eye sockets looked down as he again lifted his axe over his shoulder swinging it down towards The Shadow. The Shadow ducked and rolled under the axe as it struck two Nazi soldiers sending their severed bodies flying into the wall.

The Shadow reloaded his gun as he sprang up near Tracy's forces and Flattop and his men. Gilgamesh looked down at the corned Pruneface and again lifted his axe. Tracy took a few steps forward standing next to The Shadow. The Shadow looked over at him as Tracy cocked his gun, held it up, and fired at Gilgamesh. As one The Shadow, Police, and the remaining mobsters began to fire upon the massive horror in front of them. Small pieces of bone flew off the back of the mammoth zombie causing him to pause from killing Pruneface and turning to face the unlikely alliance behind him. Gilgamesh waded through the maelstrom of bullets as he walked toward the remaining men. His axe came crashing down, Tracy jumped to the side as The Shadow again rolled under the blow. Two police officers and Steve the Tramp were not so lucky as the massive axe crushed them. The remaining police scattered around the giant and kept firing. Flattop realized he was next to the door and ran. He figured that facing Big Boy would be easier then battling some giant from an ancient time.

Sitting on the floor with his back against the wall near the door Tracy, aimed his gun at the giant's eye sockets and fired. Even though there were no eyes Tracy figured the monster had to have a weak point and he was determined to find it before all of his men were dead. Tracy watched as his men and The Shadow continued to fire in vain at the beast. Gilgamesh swung his axe in the air smashing through several of the pillars bringing stone debris down on Sam and three officers burying them alive. The two remaining officers huddled near Tracy for a last stand as he stood up. Tracy thought to himself that this may be the night he didn't go home to Tess. He took a moment to pray that she would forgive him and live a happy life with someone else. After that he cocked his gun and fired again.

The Shadow knew there was one chance he had to stop the beast. If he could separate Gilgamesh from his axe it may satiate his blood lust and return him to his dormant state. The Shadow ran past the god and into the armory section. Tracy and his men stood their ground firing at monster until they ran out of rounds. Gilgamesh moved toward the trio lifted the axe across his body over his shoulder and brought it crashing down. Tracy buckled his knees falling to the floor as the axe swatted his hat off his head before impaling the two officers into the wall. Tracy stood up and stared at Gilgamesh with contempt, Tracy balled his fists and waited for the inevitable, his only thoughts were of Tess, he hoped someday she would remarry and become a mother like she always wanted to be. Tracy closed his eyes as The Shadow came running back into the room.

The Shadow jumped at the hand Gilgamesh held his axe in. He drove a spear head with a grenade tied to it into the corpse's hand above the wrist. As The Shadow jumped away from Gilgamesh the grenade exploded sending the axe crashing to the floor and the hand flying toward Pruneface. The same blue light that heralded his appearance enveloped Gilgamesh again. The light began to twist and shake before heading towards the coffin. The entire room filled with light shinning like a sun and the corpse of Gilgamesh appeared in the coffin again. Standing with his back against the wall, Tracy slid down it until he was sitting on the floor. The Shadow fell to his knees to catch his breath, Pruneface picked up the severed hand and ran for the door. The Shadow saw him and first rose to his feet to perform the ritual to send the coffin back to Shambala, he knew he could catch Pruneface soon enough to regain the hand. As The Shadow began the enchantment Dick Tracy walked over to him. He said to The Shadow "You're going to have to come with me." The Shadow answered "I must return this to its rightful place." Tracy punched The Shadow across the face "Most of my men are dead! I've got the bodies of a foreign army scattered all over the place and half the mob stuck to the wall! You are giving me answers one way or another!" Tracy pulled back to hit him again but The Shadow brushed the blow aside and delivered an uppercut to Tracy's jaw. "Tracy ran his sleeve across his face to wipe off some blood. "Fine if that's how it's going to be."
