Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 10

One hour before Big Boy's crew makes its move on the museum

The sound of dripping water on a steel girder echoed through the condemned building The Shadow had stashed his ammunition in. The moon light shone into the room he was using to load his pistols as well as place replacement clips around a belt attached to his waist. He sat on a rotted beam that had once been the support for the floor above him, which had given way and crashed down. Several people lived on the ground floor of the building he was in — the Depression had hit the city hard. He could often hear the people comforting their children, telling them how the President had a New Deal and would see them through this, keeping their hopes up with suggestions of possibly an extra bowl of soup for them tomorrow in the line. The mother of the young children began to sing a song to them to help them sleep.

The Shadow slammed a clip into one of his guns. He thought back to his days as Ying Ko the Warlord, when the lives of the people below him would be considered privileged compared to the lives of the slaves who worked in his opium fields. This is why he was here now, to redeem himself for his past crimes against humanity by helping prevent future ones. If the body of Gilgamesh fell into the wrong hands the suffering these people were enduring had only just begun.

Simply stealing and the returning the body of Gilgamesh would not be enough now. The Shadow had the ability to look into the hearts of men. The evil he saw in the souls of the man with the wrinkled brow and his army was enough to make even him pause. Furthermore, he had concluded that the criminals in the city were simply after the coffin for its monetary value, but the Germans had a darker purpose in mind. From looking at the hearts of these men he could sense that while they were not fully aware of the power of Gilgamesh, they knew the coffin possessed mystical properties. The Shadow feared that someone in their ranks might have an idea of how to harness that power and unleash it upon mankind. These feelings alone should have been enough to convince The Shadow to simply walk into the museum hypnotize the guards into falling asleep, perform the incantation and teleport the coffin back to Shambala.

But, he could sense an ever growing dark presence coming closer and closer to the city with each passing second. He could sense an evil coming near that even in his days as Ying Ko he would have found unfathomable. The Shadow could not let such a being continue to walk the earth, for wherever this being was an untold death count would follow. This creature was after the coffin as well, The Shadow felt that if he left the coffin out as bait he may be able to dispose of the evil before it brought the world to ruin. He knew this was a massive risk but The Shadow was not sure if the opportunity to dispose of such and evil would avail itself again. Surely exterminating a being of this manner would not only make the world a better place but also bring him one step closer to redemption. The Shadow finished arming himself for the upcoming battle tonight. A battle in which he knew people were going to die. Cliff Marsland had already informed him that the mobsters would be making a move on the coffin tonight. From what he could sense this evil presence planned to as well. He had heard that the road to hell was paved with good intentions. He also knew through the lives of Jacob, David, and Samson that the road to Heaven could be paved with violent ones.

Masking himself from view he walked a few blocks up town towards the museum, stopping at an upscale house he knocked on the door. When a butler answered he hypnotized him into making an extra pot of soup and taking it to the family in the building he was staying at. Even if paved with violence the road to heaven needed some good deeds to help along the way.

  50 minutes before the heist

Pruneface's hands shook as he fixed his uniform. He attempted to load his gun but dropped several bullets on the floor in the process. Nervously he bent down to pick them up, as The Brow walked in "Are you all right Pruneface? What is the matter? Why are you so jumpy?" Pruneface scrapped his finger along the cold concrete floor as he picked up his bullets "He is coming, Brow! His plane is less then two hours away! If we do not return with the coffin tonight, we will be at the mercy of a being to whom the very concept of mercy is less then a joke! I will lead the assault myself tonight! We must succeed!" Pruneface walked out of his office and saluted his men as they loaded into a military covered truck and headed for the city.

45 minutes before the heist - The Tracys' apartment

Dick Tracy held his wife Tess in his arms as she sobbed. "But why Dick? Why do you have to be out there on the front lines again. You have done it so many times before why can't someone else do it?!" Tracy reached down, grabbed his wife's head, lifted it up to look into her eyes, and kissed her. As their lips parted he said, "Tess, I have to honey. It's my job. Those other guys look up to me for leadership. If I'm not there and they make a decision that costs the life of an officer, I could never live with myself thinking if I could have prevented it."

Tears poured through Tess's eyes. "What about when you don't come back?! What I am supposed to do then, knowing that I let you walk out that door!" Tracy hugged his wife. "I've always come back before haven't I? And this might be the one we need to finally break Big Boys organization. Come on honey, you knew there would be days like this when we got married." Tess continued to weep, "I know, but I've heard before that this was the one that would break Big Boy, and I knew this could happen when I said I do, but that doesn't mean I have to like it! And you still haven't answered my question. What happens when you don't come home?" Tracy kissed his wife one more time, "I'm not going to lie to you honey. That day may come but it won't be today."

They stared into each other's eyes for a moment before Sam Catchem's voice broke the silence over Tracy's wrist radio. "Tracy we're armed and ready to go down here" Tracy mouthed the words I love you to his wife and she did the same. Tracy then walked toward the door grabbing his yellow hat and trench coat on the way down the steps.

30 minutes before the heist - Big Boy's night club

Big Boy looked at his watch again and screamed "Still no Cliff or Itchy! Where the hell are they!" Flattop replied meekly "I don't know boss, Itchy is usually on time and Cliff's always seemed like a stand up guy. I can't figure where they are." Big Boy checked his watch again "You and the others will have to go do this job without them. Faceless has already taken over the guard's job. You guys got plenty of ammo for tonight in case anything happens again." Flattop smiled, "Yeah boss, plenty." Big Boy scolded him, "Don't smile like that! With any luck, within the hour you guys will be on your way to Mexico to make the drop off without a shot being fired." With that, Flattop, JoJo Nidle, and Steve the Tramp loaded into a truck and headed for the museum.
