Book 3 - Chapter 4

The Shadow walked down the dark sewer main with both guns drawn at his side. The ceiling of the sewer was nearly eight feet. This caused an echo in the sewer, making it difficult to keep track of Ra's by listening to his footsteps. The Shadow slowly continued to walk further down into the murky sewers. Ra's al Ghul was crouched down in a series of pipes which ran across the top of the main. He watched as The Shadow slowly approached him. In the open, his guns give him an advantage, Ra's thought to himself, but here in the underground tunnels I have the upper hand. The caverns of these sewers are similar to the mountain caves in which I train. I am accustomed to confined hand to hand combat. Is this man? Ra's tensed his legs as The Shadow walked directly underneath him. When the Shadow was a few feet in front of him Ra's pulled a knife from his belt and jumped down at The Shadow's back. The Shadow turned, lifting his arm in front of him. Ra's knife plunged into the Shadows' left forearm causing him to drop his gun into the water. Ra's momentum sent them both crashing into the wall of the sewer main. The Shadow landed on his back but Ra's had managed to land on his feet. Standing over The Shadow Ra's kicked him in the face and pulled his knife from the Shadow's arm. Ra's lifted the knife to stab him again. The Shadow pulled his knees into his chest and then thrust them forward, kicking Ra's in the chest and forcing him to stumble backwards. The Shadow stood up aimed his gun at Ra's and fired. Ra's ducked under the bullet and darted towards The Shadow. Ra's leaned his weight on his back leg and threw a sidekick into The Shadow's jaw. The blow sent the Shadow falling backwards into the sewer water. As The Shadow's body landed in the water, Ra's ran off further into the sewer main.

The Shadow sat up to see Ra's going deeper into the sewer system. He stood up. His cloak was soaking wet. He's smart, The Shadow thought, he tried to soak me in order to weigh down my clothes and slow me down. It won't help him. He is still going to die tonight. The Shadow followed Ra's into the depths of the sewers. Ra's ran the schematics of the Gotham sewers through his mind. He had studied them in detail before he left for Gotham. When Ra's entered a city he made sure he knew every inch of it. Never enter a battle without knowing the battlefield, Ra's thought. Ra's came to an opening in the wall of the sewer main and crawled into it. The Shadow saw Ra's enter the opening and he followed him. When the Shadow made it to the opening all he could see was darkness. The opening was only big enough to allow a grown man to crawl through it. "No room for another ambush." The Shadow thought. He climbed into the opening head first, using his elbows to inch himself forward. After a few minutes, he thought he saw a dim light at the end of the tunnel. The Shadow took his hat off and stuck it outside of the tunnel. Nothing happened. If Ra's is waiting for me he didn't go for that trick. The Shadow then stuck his head out of the opening. He quickly pulled his head back into the tunnel just as a subway train went whizzing by it. The Shadow waited for the train to pass then he climbed out of the opening between the sewer and the subway. There he looked to his left and saw Ra's running on a small ledge between the walls and the tracks. He ran alongside the moving train. They where approaching a bend in the tunnel. The Shadow fired twice but the bullets missed their target and bounced off the subway walls. The Shadow continued his pursuit.

Ra's turned the bend in the subway and came to a subway port as the train was pulling in. Ra's emerged from the tunnel and boarded the train headed for the business district of Gotham City. The Shadow came around the bend to see Ra's boarding the train. He jumped onto the back of the train and entered. He checked the last car and saw no one. He moved to the next train car. This one had a few people but none of them were Ra's. Even in a crowd Ra's would be hard to miss with his long green cloak on. The Shadow moved on to the next car. At the front of the car, he could see the green cloak draped from Ra's shoulders. Ra's was facing the front of the car with his back to The Shadow. He slowly walked up to Ra's put his gun up to Ra's back and placed his hand on Ra's shoulder. The Shadow said, "Time to die", and turned Ra's around. He was stunned to see a disheveled vagrant staring back at him. The Shadow heard a voice behind him say "Yes I believe it is time for you to die." The Shadow screamed in pain as Ra's dug his knife into the Shadow's side. The people on the train panicked and screamed. The Shadow turned and brought the butt of his gun slamming into Ra's jaw pitching him backwards. He then reached down and pulled the knife put of his side. With the skill of a world class boxer Ra's delivered a left jab to The Shadow's cheek and directly followed with a right jab. The Shadow staggered backwards. Ra's moved in and brought an uppercut into the cut on The Shadow's midsection. He doubled over in pain. Ra's reached down grabbing The Shadow by the head he brought his knee up into The Shadow's nose. Ra's then grabbed The Shadow's belt and cloak and threw him to the floor. The Shadow turned over pointed his gun up hoping to get a shot at Ra's but there was only empty air above him.
