Book 4 - Chapter 1

Batman drove the Batmobile full speed towards the rocky side of the mountain in front of him. The car was only inches from the face of the mountain when its walls opened up before him. The car sped down the runway deep into the corridors of the Batcave. As he pulled the Batmobile to a stop, he replayed the night's events in his head. Two murderers had escaped him and that thought did not sit well with him. Both Zorro and The Shadow were still loose in Gotham. He exited the car and walked towards the main part of the cave. Batman sat down in front of his computer and typed in the coordinates The Shadow had given him. They pointed to a location deep in the Brazilian Rain Forest. Most of what The Shadow told me about Ra's and the talisman coincides with what I already know, Batman thought to himself. Ra's has been after the talisman for decades now. I also know Zorro has been the talisman's protector. The Zorro I encountered tonight must have been the young boy who witnessed the death of the previous Zorro. He would have several reasons for wanting Ra's dead. It would not be beyond Ra's to manipulate Zorro into coming after me. Ra's would have known Zorro would be no match for me. Ra's had me do his dirty work for him. However, Ra's also would have figured I'd put the pieces together after defeating Zorro and pursue him. He would not risk me coming after him unless he is planning to manipulate me further. Batman paused for a second. The only player who does not fit into this game is The Shadow. There is no evidence that he was not working for Ra's. The Shadow might be one of Ra's agents. The only thing that confirms The Shadow's story of pursuing Ra's is the memory of an eight year old boy. If there is one thing I can trust it is the memory of that boy on that night.

Batman leaned back in his chair convinced that whatever The Shadow was, he was not one of Ra's agents. Batman decided that even if Ra's was manipulating him, he had to stop him from opening the gates of Shambala. Zorro is still out there, he thought to himself. A murder is still loose in my city. I won't make the same mistake The Shadow did. I won't let one killer loose in order to pursue a greater threat. No life is unimportant. I'm not Clark. I can't be in two places at once. With that decision Batman entered everything he knew about Zorro into his computer. Zorro's height, weight, ethnicity, approximate age, a brief sketch, description of his injuries, and a list of possible hideout's he had created. When the file was completed he sent it to the computer of Commissioner James Gordon. Brooding, Batman thought to himself, I may not be able to pursue Ra's and Zorro but I can give Jim the information he needs to track him down. Jim is a good cop. He and his men will find Zorro. Now I think it's about time Bruce Wayne personally checked in on how his Save the Rainforest funds are being used in South America. Batman first sent an email to Lucius Fox, explaining his trip to Brazil. He then called the Wayne Aerospace Division and requested that his personal Wayne Aviation SlipStream jet be fueled for his departure. Changing into his civilian clothes Bruce loaded everything that he would need into his car: a lightweight Batman costume, weapons, and tracking materials. Once he reached Wayne Aerospace, he loaded his jet by himself and took off heading south. At 40,000 feet the Wayne Aviation SlipStream began the conversion into the Batplane III.
