Book 4 - Chapter 2

Zorro arrived in at the airport closest to the coordinates he got from The Shadow. To call this place an airport was a stretch. It had a small tower and a single landing strip. It was located on the outskirts of the jungle. As the plane landed, Zorro took note of the airport. There was not a single plane in sight. The thought occurred to Zorro. Have I beaten the Demon here? For once do I have a chance to surprise him? As soon as the plane came to a stop, Zorro approached his pilot. Drawing his machete from its holster he put his left arm around the man's neck, choking him from behind. He then thrust his machete through the back of the chair and into the man's stomach. The man contorted for a few seconds, looking up at Zorro. Zorro glared at him and said, "You will never again pick up drugs to pollute young minds with." Using his knife Zorro carved a Z onto the man's face as he drew his last breath.

Zorro exited the plane and headed for the tower. There was a lone car parked outside the tower. Zorro figured there were no more than two people in the tower. As Zorro approached the tower, its controller ran out towards him. Zorro held his bloody machete in front of him ready for a battle. The controller stopped dead in his tracks and screamed. He then began running back for the tower. Zorro pulled out his gun fired a single shot at the controller and in Portuguese told him to stop. The man stopped running. Zorro caught up to him and questioned him,"How many other people are in the tower?" The controller replied, "Only me senor. I live and work here." Zorro continued his questioning, "How many other planes have landed here today?" The man answered, "None senor. No other plane has come here in weeks. That is why I ran out to see you. I do not often see other faces. Please do not kill me!" Zorro glared at the man, "Listen to me. You are going to do exactly what I tell you and I will let you live. A second plane will be landing here soon. Guide them in and do not alert them to my presence." Sweating profusely, the controller said, "Is that all?" Zorro did not answer; he simply walked into the surrounding jungle and waited.

Several hours passed, finally Ra's personal plane appeared over the horizon. The plane landed on the runway, and Zorro watched as the hatch opened. First, several members of the Army of the Shadow exited the plane, followed by Ubu and finally Ra's himself. Around Ra's neck he could see the Talisman of Cortez. Anger ran through Zorro's body. Zorro waited until they were on the open runway, he then raised his gun and fired at Ra's and his men. His first round of shots missed Ra's completely, but hit one of his followers. The mercenary's corpse fell to the ground. Ubu and the other mercenaries surrounded Ra's and led him to cover behind a massive boulder next to the runway. They then opened fire in Zorro's direction. Using the trees as cover, it was near impossible for Ra's men to hit him. Zorro cursed himself for not being able to kill Ra's with his first shot. He never reloaded after killing the mobster back in Gotham. He was out of bullets.

Zorro ran low out of the woods and took cover behind a small luggage vehicle on the runway path. Ra's watched as the Zorro made his break. He turned to Ubu and said, "Is that the misbegotten fool who thinks he is Zorro the one we are fighting with? I am surprised he escaped The Detective's grasp. I thought this might be real threat. That with the stakes as high as they are The Detective would have abandoned his abhorrence for fire arms. Zorro is not threat. He is mere annoyance. I was content to simply let The Detective incarcerate him before he played his part in this quest. Ubu, that buffoon is clearly out of ammunition. My followers will accompany me into the jungle. You stay here and deal with the bastard child I should have killed decades ago." Turning to his other followers Ra's said, "Follow me to destiny. We must enter the jungle and gather the proper incentive for our guest." Ra's and his men waded into the jungle. Ubu pulled his sword from its hilt and stood up. Zorro saw Ra's depart and Ubu rise with sword in hand. Zorro rose from behind the cart and drew his machete from its strap. He locked eyes with Ubu. The two walked across the landing strip, never breaking each others gaze, and stopped several feet away from each other.

Zorro glared at Ubu with utter disdain. This was the closest he had ever come to killing Ra's. This bodyguard would not stop him now. Ubu had a complacent look on his face. In Ubu's mind his only thought was that his master had given him an order, and he intended to carry it out. Screaming, Zorro lunged at Ubu bringing his blade down at him in a horizontal slash. Ubu lifted his sword, holding it in front of him vertically to block the blow. As Zorro landed, Ubu shifted his weapon from a horizontal block to a 45 degree slash. Zorro twisted his wrist pointing the edge of his machete to the ground as he brought up his weapon to block Ubu's strike. Zorro brought his left hand around and struck Ubu in the face with a roundhouse punch. Ubu's head snapped sideways but he was otherwise unaffected by the blow. He absorbed its impact and brought up his left hand to send an uppercut crashing into Zorro's ribs. As the punch connected, Zorro screamed and fell to his knees. The broken ribs he suffered at the hands of Batman throbbed with pain. He looked up to see Ubu's sword slicing down towards his neck. Zorro barely managed to raise his machete in time to save his life. He then wrapped his arms around Ubu's legs and pulled back, causing Ubu to fall on his back. Zorro stood up looked down at Ubu and screamed, "Die!" He then brought his sword slicing towards Ubu. Ubu brought up his sword to block, rolled onto his side, and delivered and roundhouse kick to Zorro's ribs. Zorro screamed in pain and stumbled backwards. Zorro watched as Ubu regained his footing. Zorro was hunched over in pain. He knows I'm hurt, he thought to himself as he held his sword above his head.

Ubu charged Zorro and swung his blade horizontally at Zorro's head. Wincing in pain Zorro twisted his upper body. Holding his sword at an angle in front of him, he put his left hand behind the dull edge of his machete to help absorb the blow. After blocking Ubu's attack Zorro made a back-handed horizontal slash that cut Ubu across his chest from shoulder to shoulder. Ubu backed away from Zorro. Zorro attacked, trusting his knife towards Ubu in a stabbing motion. Ubu used his sword to deflect the attack. Ubu brought his sword from above his shoulder swinging down towards Zorro. Zorro brought his machete up from his hip to block. The swords crashed together in front of them causing spark to fly and a loud "Clang" to echo through the jungle. Zorro twisted his wrist causing the edge of his blade to point to the ground he brought his arm up cutting Ubu from his right hip diagonally across his body to his left shoulder. Ubu screamed in pain, throwing his arms out at his sides. The wounds on his chest formed an oddly shaped number seven. Zorro stepped forwards to Ubu. Slashing down, he severed Ubu's sword hand from his arm. Ubu brought the bloody stump in front of him and grabbed it with his left hand. As Ubu howled in pain, Zorro switched his grip on his machete. He held it so that the butt of his weapon was facing up towards him and the blade was pointed to the ground. Placing his left hand over his right and the butt of the blade he aimed his weapon at Ubu. He then drove it into the right side of Ubu's stomach. Zorro pulled the machete across Ubu's waist, spilling his intestines on the ground. Ubu fell on his back dead. The three wounds on his chest made a huge Z across his body.

Zorro stood over his victim, flexed his arms in front of him and screamed triumphantly. Finally some small measure of revenge! But my real adversary is still out there and my lust for vengeance shall not be satiated until I have spilled his blood as well, he thought to himself once he had regained his composure. Zorro reached down, pulled his weapon from Ubu's body and headed into the jungle.
