Book 1 - Chapter 4 (cont'd)

Drawing his sword from its sheath and lifting it over his head Zorro lunged at Ra's. Zorro brought his sword down aiming at Ra's head. Ra's countered by quickly lifting his sword vertically in a blocking motion. Zorro landed on the plateau and swung his sword from his right shoulder at Ra's midsection only to have his blow deflected again. Ra's stepped forward bringing his blade in a backhand motion from his left hip across his body attempting to cut Zorro in half only to have him duck under the blow and bring the butt of his sword crashing into Ra's jaw. Ra's stumbled backwards and Zorro delivered a sidekick to Ra's sending him falling off the fencing plateau. Ra's back crashed into the floor of the cave.

Looking down at Ra's Zorro said, "You see my friend you are outclassed and overmatched. I offer you this last chance at surrender before you further humiliate yourself." Ra's replied by flipping up to a standing position and swinging his sword in a slashing motion at Zorro's knees. Zorro jumped in the air and flipped over Ra's landing behind him. Zorro quickly turned and motioned to stab Ra's through his back. Ra's spun around the parry and brought his sword slicing down at a forty five degree angle. Zorro quickly brought up his weapon to block. Ra's momentum had continued to carry him forward and even as Zorro blocked the sword Ra's was able to bring his knee into Zorro's midsection. The blow sent Zorro stumbling backwards Ra's lifted his sword above his head and brought it down. Zorro again raised his blade to block it. As before when Zorro blocked the blow, Ra's stepped in and landed a snap kick into Zorro's jaw. Zorro stumbled backwards placing some distance between himself and his opponent.

Zorro realized this man was different from most people he had faced before. Zorro usually dueled with men trained in the European form of fencing where they are taught how to use the blade as an extension of their arm. This man was trained in the Asian forms of the sword, when he was in a duel his whole body was a weapon, a strike from the blade may only be a diversion to throw a kick with the leg. Zorro knew he must be aware of the man's entire body and not just the blade.

Ra's waited a moment for Zorro to strike he knew that it was better to wait for your opponent to make a mistake and take advantage of it then to rush fool heartedly at a trained swordsman. As the stared at each other, Zorro reasoned his opponent was physically stronger then him and was better trained in unarmed combat. However, the exchange so far had shown him he had faster blade speed then his adversary. He knew how to use that to his advantage, tiny cuts, wear him down. Zorro also knew the cave was his home. He knew every inch of it. He could easily navigate it in the dark. To use this to his advantage he had to keep Ra's moving thereby keeping him distracted about what was behind him.

Zorro charged Ra's sending his sword in a stabbing motion towards Ra's shoulder. Ra's swept the blow to the side and brought his sword swiping back at Zorro only to have it blocked. Zorro tried to swipe low aiming for Ra's knee but Ra's blocked it. Ra's bought his weapon straight up at Zorro's jaw, Zorro easily turned the blow away. Zorro leaned in swiping at Ra's chest, Ra's stopped the blow and retaliated in kind. Zorro countered and swiped at Ra's midsection stepping in as he did so, Ra's brushed the blow aside, but Zorro had only used it to step in closer to Ra's. Zorro quickened his pace, he brought his sword up quickly at Ra's jaw, Ra's leaned his head back as the blade whizzed by his face. Zorro again moved in bringing his sword down quickly along the same trajectory in the opposite direction Ra's barely managed to bring the bottom of his blade up in time to protect his face.

Zorro quickly shifted his blade horizontally and swiped at Ra's midsection. Ra's twisted his wrist and forearm while turning his body so that his sword was pointed towards the ground. Zorro shifted his wrist so the point of his blade was pointed towards Ra's he then trust forward, the steel of Zorro's weapon slid off Ra's sword and sliced along the right side of his rib cage. Ra's stepped back as blood oozed from his side. Zorro advanced, as he came close Ra's slashed at the masked guardian. Zorro countered by in one motion turning aside Ra's attack and bringing his sword to Ra's face as he pounced forward. Ra's quickly brought up his sword to stymie Zorro's thrust. The two men were right on top of each other, the handles of their swords were the only thing between them. They stared into each other's eyes. Ra's had a look of grim determination on his face while Zorro simply looked at him and grinned. Ra's muscles flexed as he pushed Zorro off. As he was being pushed off, Zorro pulled his blade upwards slicing Ra's from the center of his chest to the top of his right shoulder. Blood spurted from Ra's as he stepped back.

Ra's leaned forward into a defensive position holding his sword in front of him with both hands as Zorro jeered at him. "Those cuts are not fatal but they will bleed a good deal, you have lost this fight. Your energy will leave you as you continue to lose blood and you are in my home. You call yourself a hunter but what hunter would not only follow a fox into his den but do so injured. You are not a hunter. You are a fool! Come then fool, let us finish this before I grow bored with you and leave you down here to bleed to death. While I retire to my villa to read stories which include villains far more menacing then yourself, perhaps the story of Hansel and Gretel even the old hag in that fairy tale would offer a greater challenge then you!"

Ra's said nothing and only stared at the guardian of the medallion that was meant to be his.
