Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 1

  Chicago....

Three men sat in an office in the back of an uptown night club. The night club was just a front for an illegal gambling and bootlegging operation. The entire establishment was run by the gangster known only as Big Boy. Physically he was an overweight, balding man dressed in a business suit. Publicly, Big Boy did not exist; he ran several of the town's night clubs but none of them were in his name, he was just a silent partner in them. His real business was organized crime. Big Boy ran all of the crime families in the greater Chicago area, and whether the mobsters knew it or not, they all worked for Big Boy. Big Boy had his hand in everything: bootlegging, gambling, extortion, and money laundering.

Big Boy sat looking at the man seated across from him. Standing behind Big Boy with a Tommy gun in hand was his enforcer. He was ruthless man with a misshapen skull that made it look almost rectangular in appearance. As a result of his oddly shaped head he called himself Flattop.

Across the desk from them sat a large dark skinned man. He had no hair and was dressed in Middle Eastern-style clothes. He had only identified himself as Ubu**. He had come here looking to hire the services of Big Boy in a particular heist. "Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, gentleman," Ubu spoke, "My master also sends his regards to you." Big Boy responded, "Just who is your master? I don't like workin' for someone whose name I don't know." Ubu replied, "I am not permitted to say my master's name out loud, and he is willing to pay for the inconvenience of him remaining nameless." Big Boy leaned back in his chair "The word my man gave me is that ya want us to pull of some kinda train heist for ya. I gotta tell ya a train heist is risky business, too many factors to consida. If it's a train heist ya want us to do, I gonna say no, and if I have ta say no that means ya just wasted my time. In that case I'm gonna need your master's address so I can send your head back ta him in a box." Behind Big Boy, Flattop tightened the grip on his Tommy gun and began to lift it up.

Ubu sat solemnly in his chair. "Mr. Big Boy, my life is unimportant. To kill me would be meaningless, however to refuse my masters offer would be a great disrespect to him and his vengeance would be merciless." Big Boy's eyes flared and he stood up pointing his finger at Ubu screaming, "ARE YA THREATING ME!? NOBODY COMES INTA MY OFFICE AND THREATENS ME!" Flattop pointed his gun directly at Ubu when Ubu replied in a calm voice, "Mr. Big Boy I am not threatening you. I am simply stating a fact. My master is a man who gets what he wants and is willing to utilize whatever means are needed to attain his goals. He is not above using violence. However he is aware that there are usually more effective methods. In this instance he is willing to pay you $25 million dollars to pull of this train heist and transport the cargo to Mexico where it will be delivered to me."

Calming down, Big Boy sat back down in his chair. "For $25 mill you're not wastin' my time. Exactly what is it that ya want us to get from this train for ya?" Ubu leaned forward in his chair. "It is an ancient Sumerian sarcophagus. It will be coming in on the 1:00 am train headed for the Museum of Natural history. Retrieve the sarcophagus and transport it to Mexico City at this address." Ubu handed Big Boy a slip of paper with an address written on it. He then continued, "I will pay $5 million today and the other $20 million in Mexico upon delivery." A smile spread itself across Big Boy's face "Mista, I don't why your master is so hard up for this coffin but we got ourselves a deal."

** Author's Note: this is not the same Ubu that appears in "Lineage". Ubu is in fact the name of every member of cult dedicated to protecting Ra's a Ghul throughout the ages. See "Lineage" for more info on Ra's.
