Shadow of the Warrior

Chapter 11

Dick Tracy and Sam Catchem watched from an unmarked car as Flattop backed the truck up to the freight entrance of the museum. Tracy cocked his shot gun as he turned to Sam. "Signal the others we want them alive if possible but tell those guys to be ready. We don't move until they're in the museum and trying to lift the coffin." Sam nodded and spoke into his radio watch. The message relayed to a dozen cops parked in unmarked cars along the street.

Flattop, JoJo, Steve and Faceless in the guise of a now deceased security guard entered the display room that housed the ancient coffin. In the dark of night with, the set up of the display they felt as if they really were walking through the inside of an ancient pyramid. They passed through the silhouettes cast by the tall stone pillars that made up the walkway to the display. As Faceless passed the last pillar before the coffin, the butt of a gun came crashing down into the back of his head from the darkness sending him sprawling onto the floor knocked out. Flattop spun, Tommy Gun in hand, and began to fire into the darkness. The Shadow slipped behind the pillar for cover as bullets dug themselves into the stone display.

Outside in the car Tracy could hear the shots being fired inside he screamed into his radio "Damn! All Hell broke lose in there. Everyone GO, GO, GO!" Tracy led the charge as the police poured into the museum. As Tracy and the police turned into the room where the display was, the only light was the moonlight which shone in through the skylight above the coffin, as well as the light expelled from each gun shot fired. He could see Flattop and several other men using the row of pillars to right of the coffin for cover while behind the other row of pillars he could see the black robed cowboy/ghost he had been hearing about. Pat Patterson switched on the lights for the display shouting "All right everyone…." His words were cut short as a bullet exploded through his forehead. Tracy turned around as he dived, he could see the Nazi forces behind him charging into the museum guns blazing.

Pruneface screamed, "For the Fatherland! Death to all of the Americans and retrieve the coffin."

The Shadow ducked behind the pillar he was using for cover. Everything that could have gone wrong did. The Germans, the Mob and police were all here shooting at each other. Were this just the mob and the Germans again, The Shadow could have taken his time and picked them off if possible, but the police complicated matters. He could not fire at them, however, they had no qualms about shooting at him. Bullets continued to fly around The Shadow like mosquitoes on a stagnant pond. Considering the mobsters the lesser of two evils The Shadow spun around to the other side of the pillar he was using for cover and began firing at the Germans. His volley struck one of the soldiers in the chest and leg killing him instantly. The hail of bullets from all sides intensified as The Shadow ducked back behind the pillar to reload his gun.

JoJo looked at Flattop as they crouched behind two pillars for cover, shouting at him to be heard over the gun fire, "What the hell is going on Flattop? Who do we shoot at?" Flattop peered around the pillar and began to squeeze the trigger on his Tommy Gun swinging it from side to side replying, "Everyone but us, you dummy!" Steve and JoJo began to fire in all directions.

Tracy had regrouped his men to the pillars in corner near the back of the display room. He tried to survey the situation as the officer to his left fell at his feet with a back full of bullet holes. Tracy cursed and told himself he would mourn him and Pat later. As far as Tracy could tell the Nazis were in the corner opposite him at the far back of the display room. Flattop and his boys were on the same side of the display as him but at the front of the display near the coffin. Across from them was the "Ghost". It seemed all four corners of the display were occupied by a different faction using pillars for cover and firing at each other. As Tracy was thinking a bullet flew past his mid section tearing holes into his trench coat. He cocked his shotgun and fired towards the Nazis.

One of the soldiers near Prunceface fell backwards with shotgun wounds buried into his chest as a bullet from the ghost near the coffin slammed into the ear of another soldier. Pruneface turned to The Brow, "We are losing men quickly you must make a run for the coffin see if you can figure out how to unleash the power it is our only hope. He will land soon if we return empty handed. Dying here will seem a comfort to us. The Brow nodded his misshapen head, and stood up. "Cover Him!" Pruneface shouted as he and the remaining men he had stood up and began firing at the three remaining corners of the room forcing Flattop, the police, and The Shadow to momentarily duck for cover. The Brow ran toward the coffin and forced the lid open. He stopped for a minute and looked in awe at the giant inside.

JoJo turned to see The Brow open the coffin screaming "No Kraut is gonna get our mummy" as he fired his gun at The Brow, ending his miserable existence. The Brow's body slumped lifelessly over the open lid of the coffin and his blood dripped onto the mummified corpse of Gilgamesh. The coffin began to shake, when suddenly a sound of thunder echoed through the room drowning out the gun fire. All of the factions ceased firing at each other to watch as a blinding brilliant stream of blue light began to emerge from the coffin. The entire room watched as the massive corpse of Gilgamesh slowly stood up inside the coffin and let loose a blood curdling moan. At seven feet, the corpse was massive. None of the men watching could move; they were all frozen with fear or amazement. Gilgamesh held his massive axe above his head and moaned again, Tracy's jaw dropped as he watched the giant double in size again reaching nearly 15 feet tall. The Shadow slowly backed away from the pillar he was using for cover. He was the only one that truly understood what he was witnessing. The battle had stirred the spirit of the warrior god, and the blood of The Brow had tainted him. The Warrior god was not only awake but mad with battle rage. He would slaughter everyone in the room and then he would turn on the city!
