Book 5 - Epilogue

The stone bridge stood empty and silent as it had for centuries. Slowly, a leather gloved hand reached over the edge of the bridge. A second gloved hand placed itself beside the first. Zorro pulled his body up onto the bridge and collapsed on his back from exhaustion. As he lay on the bridge, a bright white light appeared on the wall next to him. Zorro was nearly blinded by the brilliance of the light. He had to shield his eyes as he regained his footing. From the bright luminance The Shadow stepped forward. He spoke to Zorro, "You are not the man your mentor was but you can be. The people of Earth will need Shambala one day. Therefore, the talisman must stay on this plane to act as a key. Until that day, the talisman will need a protector. Throughout history that man has been Zorro. Are you ready to be that man? Are you ready to truly be Zorro?" Zorro looked at The Shadow and said, "The legacy of Zorro is a failure. It died with my mentor." The Shadow laughed, "The legacy of Zorro of died? Zorro's legacy has always been to protect the talisman from anyone who sought to use it for evil ends. Ironic that you killed the man who was the biggest threat to Shambala." The Shadow pointed to the portal, "Everyone in there knows you're Zorro. The only person who doesn't know is you." The Shadow handed Zorro the Talisman of Cortez saying, "Don't take my word for it. Go find out for yourself." The Shadow turned and walked back into the portal. The bright light dissipated, and only the stone wall remained with the image of a Z embedded in it. Zorro stood staring and the wall. He then looked down at the talisman in his hand.

The Shadow walked through the blinding light. Finally he came to the end of the tunnel, and a voice echoed through his head. It was the voice of Dr. Fate saying, "You have done well Lamont Cranston. Through your guidance to Batman and Zorro the Demon's mad quest has been brought to an end. You have earned your redemption your soul is now free. You may live out the remainder of your life and know that Paradise awaits you." Dr. Fate paused for a moment and then continued, "You have a choice however, while your soul will know rest, there are still many others on Earth that will know no such rest as long as there are threats to Shambala left in the world. You may choose to stay on as a special agent of this realm. You can delay your reward and still help out other souls in distress. What say you Lamont Cranston?"

The Shadow stood motionless for an instant, then lifted his head to answer...

The End
