Book 3 - Chapter 3

Ra's and his men ran down the street. They headed for the car that had brought them from the helicopter landing site. Whenever Ra's went anywhere in a car, he always had it parked several miles from his destination. This way no one would see him exit an automobile and enter a domicile. It was one of the subtle precautions that made him difficult to track down. As he ran, Ra's turned to one of his guards and said, "You stay here, and kill the man who pursues us. Protect your master." The guard simply responded, "Yes master." and stopped. He stood in the middle of the suburban street. The only light came from the street lights and the few houses which still had lights on. The mercenary lifted his automatic weapon in front of him. Looking down the street he saw nothing. A worried look came across his face as he thought back to the brief shootout in the house. The attacker can hide himself, he thought, only in the shadows of the light can he be seen. Ra's soldier began to shift his head back and fourth checking the dim puddles of light formed by the street lamps. It was dark, and hard to make out the shadows and where they came from. To his right down the street, the guard saw a silhouette slide through the light. He fired at it, but hit nothing. Turning to his left he saw another dark mass slide under a street lamp. He again fired and hit nothing. Shaking and panting the gunman screamed in frustration and began sporadically shooting down the street. After he emptied his cartridge, he stood still panting. He was sure that if the man who attacked them was still pursuing him, he was now dead. Ra's guard turned around and began walking in the direction of his master. As he took his first step, he was stopped in his tracks when an arm reached around his neck from behind and put him in a choke hold. Pulling him close, The Shadow jammed his gun into the man's back and fired three times. He then removed his arm and let the corpse slide to the ground. With grim determination he sprinted after his target.

Ra's and his guard finally made it to the limousine. Ra's opened the backdoor and entered the car yelling at his follower, "Hurry you fool! That maniac is right behind us!" The guard climbed into the driver's seat and started the car. As the limo began to pull away, The Shadow came running around the corner. He chased after the car and jumped onto its trunk. With his left hand he grabbed onto the side of the car. Holding his gun in his right he used the butt of it to smash in the back window.

Glass came crashing down on Ra's. He turned in his seat and saw the scarf covered face of The Shadow. Ra's and the Shadow locked eyes. The Shadow pointed his gun at Ra's and said, "Last chance for a merciful death. Give the Talisman and I will end your life quickly and painlessly." With the fury and speed of a man possessed, Ra's grabbed The Shadow's wrist and directed the gun away from him with his left hand. He used his right hand to deliver a series of roundhouse punches to The Shadow's face shouting at him, "Never! I shall never die! And you shall never touch the talisman!" Struggling against Ra's the Shadow forced his gun hand slightly to left. Desperately trying to hold on to the moving car while being struck in the face, he took the only option known to him. With his gun now aimed in the right direction he fired, sending a bullet through the shoulder of the car's driver. The Shadow held on tightly to the car as it swerved from side to side. The car skipped over the curb and crashed into a tree. The Shadow went flying off the car into the lawn of house the car had crashed in front of. As he hit the ground, The Shadow immediately went into a roll, cushioning his fall.

Lying on his stomach, The Shadow pointed his gun at the car. Ra's crawled out the car door opposite the side The Shadow had landed on. The Shadow fired hitting the roof of the car with a bullet. Ra's ran across the street thinking to himself, Damn that man! Without the car I shall have to use the Gotham Underground to reach the helicopter. As Ra's reached the other side of the street he climbed down into a storm drain. The Shadow stood, quickly glancing at the limo driver to make sure he was dead. The Shadow ran across the street, changing the clips on his pistols as he did so. He then followed Ra's into the Gotham sewer system.
